Information Systems Engineer
Job ID: 6915
Date Posted: March 10, 2026
Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking an Information Systems Engineer to design secure, mission-focused information systems, and the applications, services, and components that support them. This role is centered on system design and architecture, not administration or operational support. The selected candidate will be responsible for following SDL’s Information System Engineering procedure to translate mission and customer needs into well-engineered system designs that can be confidently implemented and operated.
Responsibilities include working with stakeholders to identify and document customer requirements, security and compliance obligations, and relevant industry best practices, then translating those inputs into well-architected information system designs. The selected candidate will understand how systems progress through the full lifecycle, from proposal and concept through design, implementation, and operational deployment, and will evaluate architectural alternatives and produce clear engineering artifacts that guide implementation teams in building solutions that meet defined requirements.
This is an on-site, non-remote position for our North Logan, UT location.
Candidates must be U.S. citizens. SDL does not provide visa sponsorship for employment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Designs complex, highly available information systems and supports their implementation to ensure mission success
- Provides clear, detailed guidance on selecting and implementing the most efficient solutions to meet business needs, including future capacity, facility requirements (such as floor layout, power, cooling, and pathways), network connectivity, data storage, backup, and monitoring
- Gathers and synthesizes system requirements from internal and external customers defining operational requirements including integration with other systems or components
- Works with cross-functional teams to convert requirements into complete, workable system solutions that account for technical, schedule, and cost constraints, while also evaluating and recommending viable alternatives
- Acts as a multi-discipled engineer that serves as a subject matter expert for network, compute, storage, directory services, hypervisors, and cloud systems
- Demonstrates a strong understanding of physical network infrastructure, including both copper and fiber systems
- Follows all applicable SDL engineering processes
- Assists in enhancing current engineering processes
- Serves as a peer reviewer for complex information systems designs
- Responsible for engineering documentation of assigned systems and solutions
- Evaluates vendor capabilities to provide required products or services
- Conducts research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards
- Provides technical expertise on projects and proposal efforts
- Provides expertise in defining and implementing best practices to meet or exceed mission needs
Expected Outputs (as needed):
- Requirements decomposition
- System Designs and Diagrams
- Rack elevation
- Data/Power Interconnect
- Network Architecture
- Facility requirements (floor plan, power, cooling, etc.)
- System cost estimates
- Trade and alternative studies
- Work breakdown structures
- Customer responsibility matrix
- Risk analysis matrix and risk management plan
- System architecture diagrams (logical and physical)
- Security architecture and boundary definitions
- Cloud reference architectures
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in related engineering science and 10+ years of relevant experience
- 5+ years relevant experience architecting, designing, and engineering information systems – candidate will be asked to talk through these experiences
- The ideal candidate is proactive, self-directed, and motivated to take ownership of system design challenges
- Demonstrated experience designing and integrating enterprise infrastructure systems including networking, systems, cyber, and/or cloud technologies
- Must demonstrate expertise in networking and/or cloud infrastructures, including relevant certifications
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to perform engineering trade-offs between customer requirements, schedule deadlines, program funding, and engineering best practices
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment on collaborative efforts involving both internal and external team members
- Competent in managing budgets and schedule
- Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance
- Must be able to travel, though not a normal expectation
- Valid CompTIA Security+ (or equivalent) is required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire
Preferred Qualifications:
- Active Top Secret (please disclose any clearance when applying as all are beneficial)
- Strong hands-on experience designing or implementing cloud and hybrid systems in AWS GovCloud or AWS commercial regions (or equivalent)
- Familiarity with AWS Well-Architected Framework
- Experience deploying and managing cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM, or equivalent)
- Strong understanding of networking, identity, security architecture, and system integration
- Experience migrating or integrating on-premises systems with cloud-based services
- Experience with diagramming tools and MBSE methodologies
- Familiarity with industry standards and best practices (TOGAF, IEEE/ISO/IEC 42010 & 42020)
